Theme: Making Matters
In Spring 2022, I had the opportunity to plan and teach 20+ students ranging from Kindergarten to 2nd grade, in a community art setting. Below are the lesson plans and examples of work done during this teaching experience. Enjoy!
In this lesson, students explored printmaking ink as a medium through the process of printing. We read “Be a Maker” by Katey Howes, to encourage students to think of different ways in which they are “makers” and artists. Students created monoprints of their idea of what an artist looks like by etching a drawing on styrofoam, rolling ink on top of the styrofoam, and pressing it onto paper in order to make a relief print.
In this lesson, students will be making self-portraits using yarn and construction paper. They will achieve these materials successfully by gluing the yarn to their portraits; creating their features such as nose, eyes, mouth, etc. In these self-portraits, students will be challenged to think about what makes a good friend and what being a friend means to them. The focus of this lesson comes from the book A Friendship Yarn by Lisa Moser, which shows the ups and downs of a friendship in a way that is communicable to students. They will explore this more by using “I am” statements which they will attach to their self-portrait which highlights why students think they are a good friend.
In this lesson, students will be exploring crayons and watercolor to make wax-resist artwork. Opening with the book The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt, students will be encouraged to think about how they can use all of the crayons in the crayon box. Students will also be exploring the art form of batik as a basis for making their crayon-resist artwork by choosing from various stencils to create their paintings.
In this lesson, students will explore clay (polymer clay) through processes of shaping and marbling to make a unique necklace. Students will be read Many Shapes of Clay: A Healing Story by Kenesha Sneed. After reading, shaping and marbling the clay will be demonstrated before students begin making their clay beads. Students will be given an assortment of colors of polymer clay and make their beads.
In this lesson, students will mix colors by using marble painting to make an abstract work of art. Students will read Mixed: A Colorful Story by Arree Chung, a story that creates a world where primary colors are separate from one another and, in a turn of events, end up mixing and creating new colors and community when they begin to appreciate the diversity amongst themselves. This reading will encourage students to mix colors and show them the importance of color mixing. .
In this lesson, students will collaborate with one another to create a mural that incorporates their ideas and interests. Students will read Hey, Wall by Susan Verde, a book about how a mural can encapsulate all of the diversity and differences in a community. After reading, students will be asked guiding questions about what makes them unique or different. Students will paint their ideas on paper to make a class mural
