Maslow's hierarchy of needs refers to the tiers of needs that people will chase as others are fulfilled. For example, someone who has all physiological (food, sleep etc) and safety (shelter, privacy) needs met may attempt to do something to improve their community. Conversely, someone who does not have their basic physiological needs fulfilled will likely attempt to improve that rather than looking outwards.
We designed a set of traincars that would take riders on a growth journey, teaching them to recognize and accept their existence (physiological and safety needs), their relatedness (how they connect with nature and how they connect with others) and their self-actualization (how they see themselves, and how they fit in with their world overall).
Below are the models I made, all done in Fusion 360
This traincar is windowless, filled with private "sleeping pods" designed by one of my groupmates. This train would leave the rider feeling safe and comfortable, and would act as a reliable space for them to return to if any part of the journey becomes overwhelming.
The first car in this section floor to ceiling windows and a double-sided couch facing outwards, encouraging users to observe the nature they are passing through. The second car has an inward-facing couch with massive walls, encouraging users to face each other and interact with the people around them.
This train car has chairs that will move lightly with the movement of the train, drawing the rider's attention to their body and themselves. It also has a large window as the ceiling, encouraging users to look up at the sky and consider the world around them.
At the beginning of the journey, these lights are closed like a flower before blooming. Located in the existence car, the area is dim so riders can sleep or rest in their pods.
As time goes on, these lights will "bloom" open like a flower, brightening the room and encouraging users to move on to the next step of their journey (relatedness).
These lights are located in the relatedness car, specifically the one that focuses on relatedness to others. It would hang dimly in the center of the tall "amoeba" pods.
As more people enter a pod, these lights would brighten. They are representative of fires, evoking the feeling of sitting around a campfire bonding with those around you.
