“You are my Forever”
The Idea
No good content can come without a solid idea, so I wanted to know where the process started for Nalini. “It was based on the long-distance relationship I’m in, of finding someone who actually showed me what true love is. After past relationships that were never working out, I finally found someone who showed me appreciation and love.” I asked what it felt like to be able to share that with the world. “It felt good to let the world know my feelings so that other people can relate. Long distance is hard, but I want to be with that person forever. It’s no different from any other love.”
The sound
“I went on YouTube and found there were beats for songwriting as inspiration, so I found one which worked well with my Mauritian beats, so I took that style, and put it all together, and thought it would sound so great as a dance song.” I wanted to know about why there is such a correlation between dancefloor tracks and love music. “When people do love songs, they usually do slow, sad but meaningful songs, so I thought it would be really good to get a song where people can dance to, memorise the catchy chorus, and it can be played, as a dance song, in parties, at weddings, and maybe even in the club.”
The promotion
“Getting it out there is a bit difficult, especially on TikTok, because of the way that the algorithm works.” How are you feeling about the process? “I learned a lot, especially around how people in the industry make music videos. It was especially difficult when it was cold, and my eyes were watering with the wind, trying not to show that I was cold and tired was very hard.” Music videos are a rare beast, especially to do well. “The process of finding someone to do a video was helpful, because he helped me to find locations, get a permit, find someone to do my hair, my make-up. In the music video, I have my boyfriend. At first, we were going to get a boyfriend, but then we thought, this is a song about being with someone forever, and why should I fake that with someone else? I wanted to show my true feelings.”
The live show - are there any ambitions?
“I haven’t done any live shows yet. I’ve performed in front of my family, and at weddings and stuff, but to perform in front of strangers would be a great way to get out of my comfort zone. It takes a lot of practice to get the whole live show working.” I asked, what’s so important about music as a means of expression? “I feel music is an escape into my own world, where I can still show my experience. People can resonate with music that is personal to you, because they can go ‘that is how I feel’, and that means they come back and listen again, because they relate to it.”
