In 2024, the synth musicians acquired international acclaim with their first cover album. The compilation re-imagined classic hits from The Cure, peaking with a stirring reimagining of the 1989 track ‘Fascination Street’.
Their follow-up EP, releasing this May, is called ‘The Things We Used To’. The title track follows two ex-lovers, and is split in half. The first half is all about the joys of a relationship, and the second part leans on the pain of a break-up. “We wanted to create something very fast,” says singer Roberta. “Because of all the anxieties involved when a relationship breaks down. We’re always looking for something atmospheric, but also for something different, because of the topic of the song”.
Later this year, Lunar Bird will release a completely different, Italian EP with eight songs across the two records. There are four songs on each, alongside one sung in both languages. “Weird as it may sound, this is the first time I ever got to sing in my native language. It was really liberating. Dream pop is really back in fashion following the rise of Stranger Things and eighties nostalgia. Lunar Bird’s reliance on this made the question of inspirations ever more potent, not least because of what they owe to The Cure.
The compilation album is available to purchase on Bandcamp. Roberta says it was a really intimidating experience for her and Oscar, the other half of their duo: “We wanted to respect the original, but also to add something new, otherwise why should people listen to my version? We’ve been so caring that if you listen to it, I think you can tell. ”The album was organised by fellow alt music magazine God Is In The TV - yes, our rivals can also be our friends - and was then shared by The Cure on their social media: “I wanted to cry that day! I actually did. It was so amazing”.
