Our mission is to break the cycle of poverty, one family at a time, by providing a full education to underprivileged children and giving them an opportunity for a better future.
Founder's Note and Promise
My name is Kina Fernandes, and I am a junior in high school. I have been traveling to India every year since I was 13 months old to visit my grandparents. Over the last couple of years, I have seen and felt the deep impact good education can have in changing the direction of a person's life. This is especially true for families who must choose between educating their children and making ends meet. Below, I’ve provided two examples of this.
I am starting this charity to find such families and do my best to change lives, one family at a time. If we can change the trajectory of even one person, I will consider it mission accomplished! For the past two years, I’ve been sponsoring two students on my own, hoping this gives them an opportunity to have a much better life. With your partnership, we can change many more lives.
I am committed to running this charity through my college years and beyond. I also promise to keep administrative costs as low as possible so that 100% of your donation goes directly to paying tuition or funding tutoring for the students.
Motivation
Education has the power to break the cycle of poverty. In the United States, we often take the impact of education for granted due to the many opportunities available. In India, however, quality education is neither universal nor free. Even though education has been proven to make a meaningful difference in a person’s future, other priorities often disrupt a child’s schooling.
There are many examples of how education has profoundly transformed lives in India, especially for students from poor families.
For example, a young girl from a village in South India was an eighth grader whose parents couldn’t afford to continue her schooling because they were unemployed due to medical issues. A local family stepped in to cover her tuition, recognizing her remarkable academic aptitude. With this small financial support of about $150 a year and her dedication, she earned a full scholarship to a prestigious engineering college. Today, she works as an engineer at Boeing in India. Her salary now allows her to care for her parents’ medical needs. As she progresses in her career, she has committed to help provide education to underprivileged children, ensuring a brighter future for others.
Another girl’s parents and extended family collectively decided to enroll her in a private school known for its excellent academics because she had shown strong academic potential early on. A few years later, due to a family dispute, her extended family withdrew their financial support for her education. Even though her father couldn’t afford the tuition, he refused to transfer her to a less rigorous school, knowing it would significantly affect her future. To keep her in school, he took out loans that eventually became unmanageable. Desperate for a solution, he sought help from a local family who lent him the money to pay off his debts and cover her yearly tuition.
Two years later, she took the 10th-grade national exam and earned the second-highest score in the country. She is now on an engineering track and studies by candlelight every night due to power outages in her remote village. Her academic performance and ability to stay in a good school have set her on a trajectory toward the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). Her future is undeniably bright, and her family will no longer face the challenges she experienced.
These stories inspire us to bring similar life-changing opportunities to as many hardworking students as possible. Not every student will achieve such extraordinary success, but any improvement from the status quo can significantly impact their future.
