Anglia Ruskin University has had a comprehensive Inclusive Learning Materials Policy since 2016. Guidance and templates were provided to make documents used in teaching as accessible as possible. However, the introduction of Blackboard Ally showed that we were not quite where we wanted to be although its use has instigated a small but rapid improvement in the accessibility of files. As well as providing a brief background to accessible documents at ARU, and bringing in some of the data from BB Ally, this session will explore how we can continue to improve accessibility after that initial gain when the system is introduced.
We have MindView and Read & Write networked on at Manchester Metropolitan University and have devised a number of study skills workshops around these pieces of software. So rather than just teaching students how to use this software in isolation, we teach students how to use it, focusing on specific skills, for example, ‘Getting started with MindView’; ‘MindView for revision’; and ‘MindView for planning projects’. Similarly, the title of our Read & Write sessions are ‘Getting started with Read & Write’ and ‘Using software to check your work’. The development of these sessions ensures integration into our study skills provision so that it is accessible to all students.
