ALSAIGE initially began in 2004 as a special interest group, led by Dr. Glenda R. Elliott and Frank Hrabe within the Alabama Counseling Association (ALCA). Once approved as a division in 2005, our organization became established as the Association for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues in Counseling of Alabama (ALGBTICAL) and was also established as a branch of the national ACA division, the Association for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues in Counseling (ALGBTIC).
In April 2020, the national division of ALGBTIC officially changed their name to the Society of Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities (SAIGE) in order to honor inclusivity within the LGBTGEQIAP+ community.
In June 2022, to adhere to standards set by SAIGE, our division revised our state by-laws to align with SAIGE's updated mission and values, and our name was changed to the Alabama Chapter of the Society of Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities (ALSAIGE).
ALCA has interviewed Dr. Glenda Elliott about the formation of our branch. You can read the transcript of the interview here: http://www.alabamacounseling.org/dr-glenda-elliott.html
