Under my wall And plane-tree tall The lake's blue wavelets rise and fall;
In they creep, Out they sweep, And ever their rhythmic measure keep.
John L. Stoddard, Poems on Lake Como
Our first full day we wanted to spend time in Bellagio. We took the ferry from right out in front of our hotel and enjoyed picturesque views of Varenna from the water on our way to Bellagio.
In Bellagio we walked along the treelined waterfront park, Lungolago Europa, and stopped for lunch at a cafe on the water. We headed into town wandering through the allies up to the Place de l'église, then back down to the waterfront to find some shade! The shopping is sophisticated and the cobbled streets are precarious.
After cooling down on a shady bench, we made our way to the I Giardini di Villa Melzi, a stunning botanical garden along the lake. It was a peaceful respite from the bustling of Bellagio's waterfront.
Gliding back along the water toward Varenna, we bid farewell to the Pearl of the Lake.
We watched another tempest cross the lake churning up waves that drove boaters to scurry to shore. One captain shouted and clapped wildly, goading two young women on a kayak to pick up their pace to safety! Following the show, we dined at the Locanda Cavallino right next to our hotel.
The gale hath blown itself to rest, The sun turns all to gold,
Once more the crystal mountain-sides A waveless plain enfold
