These changes are designed to keep King Arthur as unchanged as possible while still adding power to his kit by not projecting his big hits. It makes the opponent and the player engage in another layer of yomi (ability to predict your opponent's moves).
Bryden immediately leapt to the task of picking King Arthur apart when the game was released. He played hundreds of games with him and after the dust had settled he set down and created this variant. It's been tested extensively and both him and his play group have enjoyed it. It is likely the most tested variant here and changes the least about King Arthur from how he's originally intended to be played.
Critics of the "hidden" BOOST feel that, while mechanically elegant, the changed character ability doesn't have the same thematic flavor that fits King Arthur's heavy hitting meat tank playstyle.
