Play is the natural language of children and through play they express themselves and their growth. My role as a play therapist is to facilitate a safe space for a child to play and therefore work through the expressed situations. I offer opportunities for the child to show self-expression and growth in a way that fits the child’s developmental level.
Young children communicate through play. Play being a safe enjoyable act that allows children to assume the control they so rarely experience by living in a world run by adults. They are free to express their emotional experiences and what they feel like to them. With access to this act, I, as a play therapist, can help a child discover alternative ways of coping with their concerns and allow them to freely express themselves as they develop and grow.
We all have three sections to our brain and children with challenges mainly use the section called the Reptilian Brain. This section is our primal instincts that helps us survive, thus a child can have automatic coping mechanisms and become defensive through fight or flight. Play therapy helps to build new positive neutrons between the three sections of the brain, which include emotions and rationality.
Each child is unique with their personal challenges to over come so each session is tailored for those needs. Here is a list of the main obstacles play therapy helps to deal with.
