School counselors provide activities and services to students. This includes both direct and indirect services.
Direct services include in-person interactions between the school counselor and students. Direct services includes instruction, appraisal, advisement, and counseling.
Instruction
School counselors teach the counseling curriculum to students that include ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors. In doing so, school counselors maximize academic, career, and social/emotional learning for students. Instruction occurs in classrooms, small groups, or individually.
Appraisal
School counselors help students assess their abilities, interests, and skills. Through the use of data, school counselors support students in developing academic, career, and social/emotional plans. Through appraisal, student goals become more achievable and connect school to the real world.
Advisement
Advisement includes school counselors making recommendations and advising students based on the appraisal process. This includes exploring career interests, social/emotional opportunities, and educational requirements. Counselors work with the student and community when advising students and making goals.
Counseling
School counselors support students in times of transition, stress, trauma, or other situations that interfere with student success. Counseling includes identifying problems/solutions, alternative choices, and looking at consequences. School counselors collaborate with families and other professionals to help support students and can make referrals for other outside agencies and resources.
School counselors work with parents, teachers, administrators, school staff, and the community to promote student success and achievement. Indirect services include consultation, collaboration, and referrals.
Consultation
Consultation includes providing and gathering information and recommendations to individuals who can support student needs. It also includes working with families, teachers, school support staff, and the community to provide student supports. School counselors also consult to seek information that may be based on student needs and use that information to develop strategies and inform decisions for indirect services.
Collaboration
Collaboration includes multiple individuals working together to accomplish a common goal. School counselors team and partner with families, administrators, school staff, and the community to support student goals. School counselors also serve on committees or adivory boards to promote student success. School counselors organize information sessions where families can gain information about student development and how to aid student success outside of the school setting. School counselors establish partnerships within the community to help in offering additional opportunities to promote student success. Collaboration also includes school counselors providing intervention and response to crisis situations, helping students in urgent need.
Referrals
School counselors make referrals when a student's needs extend beyond the school setting or the role of the school counselor. School counselors provide brief, targeted approaches to instruction, advisement, and counseling services. School counselors have the ethical duty to refer students and parents for additional assistance beyond the role of the school counselor. Referrals may include: tutoring, career support, employment training, and mental health issues.
