Laura Little is a mom of a 3 year old boy (pictured here) who has multiple severe food allergies and is undergoing OIT (oral immunotherapy) to desensitize him to egg protein. Laura doesn’t have any food allergies herself, so she didn’t grow up understanding the measures one needs to keep themselves safe — this naturally caused anxiety as she learned how to raise her son, and she created community for herself and other allergy parents through a Tucson meet-up and Facebook group.
I met Laura on an allergy Facebook group that we're both members of, and she graciously volunteered to share her story when I put the call out for interviewees. What I didn't expect was how our connection would show up as more of an exchange rather than a typical sit-down interview. Laura answered my questions with honesty and vulnerability, but she had questions for me in turn — she wanted to know my story, and how I had gotten to the point in my life where I was able to speak about these things for a graduate school capstone. How had I been raised? How had my mom kept me safe? What was I grateful for, and what would I have wanted to be done differently? I have utmost respect for Laura and how she puts her sons needs first in everything she does, including in the way she approached this interview.
