Chef Ned and Mama Lisa, as they’re known to their café-goers and friends, run the Intentional Foods Café in Mesa, Arizona. They have over 20 combined years of restaurant experience and manage multiple allergies with their daughters. After an anaphylactic reaction to restaurant food that was supposed to be safe, they decided they were going to start a truly safe restaurant for all people who have the top 9 most common food allergens.
I first heard about Intentional Foods from an allergy Facebook group, which was then corroborated by a friend of a friend. I couldn't believe that there was an allergy-friendly restaurant less than an hour away from me — something I'd dreamed about when I was a kid. I immediately knew that I wanted to interview the owners for the podcast, and the experience blew me away.
From the first moment I stepped into Intentional Foods, I felt at home. Safe. I set my backpack down, was offered a lemonade, and didn't think twice before accepting. I didn't feel the need to wipe down the surfaces I touched, to second-guess anything about the environment. For someone with a life-threatening allergy, that peace of mind is extremely rare, and I extend my true gratitude to Brendan and Lisa for making that happen — not only for me, but for their thousands of customers.
