The goal of education within a democracy is to provide all students with the skills and concepts necessary to meaningfully participate in and contribute to their surrounding world. The lessons throughout our unit plan prepare students to do this by first introducing them to various concepts and skills and then having students apply these to concrete examples dealing with their home state of Pennsylvania. This unit plan provides students with the opportunity to practice necessary skills, master key concepts and ideas, and become informed about the community and state in which they live. Each lesson throughout this unit plan successfully addresses at least one of the ten NCSS themes ensuring that students are receiving exceptional social studies instruction. The skills and knowledge that students will take away from this unit plan will allow all to become lifelong learners and engaged citizens.
