Grunwald Castle Munich

With evidence of Roman occupation, it’s therefore very likely that GRÜNWALD CASTLE, just a little over 12 kilometers to the south of Munich, was originally a defensive Roman military lookout tower.

This is definitely one of the lesser known Castles in Bavaria and astoundingly, is rarely mentioned in hardly any of Munich's popular guidebooks or on any blogs about the city.

The castle itself is significant as an important medieval monument in the area.

And here at Absolute Munich, we certainly believe that it’s worth a mention, and if you have the time, a visit.

Cattle & livestock markets are undeniably a staple when it comes to old-world living and the Munich Rindermarkt personifies exactly that.

There’s something quite charming about imagining farmers & family members from the older generation walking their cattle to market along long forgotten roads.

These types of markets, however, have fallen out of use these days with most modern livestock markets now located within more rural communities where there might be specialist meat processing plants.

In Munich’s case, the old Rindermarkt Cattle Market Square has now been transformed into a vibrant location for shopping and is a great base for visiting the Munich Old Town (Altstadt).

Siegestor Munich: Bavarian Victory Gate

The Siegestor is an amazing piece of architecture styled on the famous Arch of Constantine that can be found in central Rome. Traits from the Arce de Triomphe in Paris, and from Berlins Brandenburg Gate also appear apparent.

Siegestor actually translates in English as Victory Gate, and that title is suitably apt, especially considering the structure was built specifically to pay homage to the exploits of the Bavarian Army’s role in defeating Napoleon Bonaparte and driving his armies from Germany.

The Siegestor in Munich is one of Bavaria’s most famous architectural marvels, and at 21m in height, 24m in breadth, and 12m in depth the Victory Arch totally commands the surrounding area between the districts of Maxvorstadt and Schwabing.
