Disabilities

Disabilities can be approached from various angles including a medical model of disability and social model of disability. A medical model of disability defines disability as an impairment and a personal tragedy. In this regard, disability refers to lack of ability or decreased ability the way majority of people do. In contrast, a social model of disability defines disability as a social construct rather than an impairment. In this sense, disability is understood as the disadvantage and sociocultural exclusion caused by lack of understanding of people with impairments. The social model of disability underpins studies in the domain of disability studies.
