Academic Vocabulary: Word Art!
Making a Word Art is a great way for students to become more acquainted with vocabulary within a given discipline. Here are some activities that could integrate the Word Art word-cloud generator into a fun project that could incorporate teamwork and creativity:
Students work together in groups of five to come up with 25 words related to drawing technique terminology such as hatching, cross-hatching, shading, etc... Students will also collaborate on deciding on an image which represents their selected words.
Students collaborate on a Word Art to help them learn at least 25 words related to color theory. They also have to work together to choose an image which represents their color-theory vocabulary terms. Examples of words may include: complimentary colors, analogous colors, primary colors, etc...
Individual students make their own "self-portrait" Word Art which should represent them as an artist. Included words will detail the student's favorite artist(s), favorite medium, favorite techniques, favorite subjects or style to work with, etc... They will choose one image which represents them as an artist.
Individual students will make their own "art history" Word Art which includes all of their favorite artists and their image should be an icon, or some sort of recognizable image that will relate to the work of one of their selected artists.
Students will work in pairs to make a Word Art featuring various painting techniques and styles such as blending, pointillism, drip art, priming, fauvism, etc... They will be asked to make sure to understand all of the words that they include because there will be a quiz consisting of all of the words that students came up with when making their Word Art in pairs. Prior to the quiz, students will be asked to present each of their Word Art creations to the rest of the class.
