My best tips and resources for the English section of the SAT
Build Vocabulary:
Regularly read high-quality texts such as classic literature, academic journals, and well-written essays.
Use flashcards to learn and review new words. Apps like Quizlet and Knowt can be helpful for this.
Read Actively:
Practice active reading techniques such as annotating the text, summarizing paragraphs, and questioning the author’s intent.
Focus on understanding the main ideas, themes, and arguments presented in the passages. Also try practicing reading and analyzing under a time limit. Develop speed-reading skills such as skimming in order to make the most of time.
Improve Grammar Skills:
Study common grammar rules tested on the SAT, including subject-verb agreement, punctuation, and sentence structure.
Practice identifying and correcting errors in sample sentences and passages.
Practice Writing:
Write practice essays on a variety of topics. Focus on clear, logical, and coherent arguments.
Review the SAT essay rubric to understand what graders are looking for in high-scoring essays.
Analyze Sample Essays (for the written part):
Review essays that have received high scores to understand what makes them effective.
Pay attention to essay structure, use of evidence, and persuasive techniques. Pay attention to the length of these essays as well.
