Scholarships
From finding them to maximizing your chances of winning
From finding them to maximizing your chances of winning
But wait, why scholarships anyway?
Scholarships are one of the best ways you can finance your education! Unlike loans, you don't have to pay them back and most of them are easily stackable for maximized benefits. As someone who has been offered over 1.2 million dollars in scholarships from a variety of institutions and organizations, I will be sharing tips on how to find the best scholarships for YOU!
Use a spreadsheet (digital or on paper) to keep track of applications, deadlines, and completion dates along with possible prizes.
Gather recommendation letters, transcripts, and essays in advance. Make sure to also account for any costs that may be associated with retrieving information such as test scores.
Write compelling essays that tell a story about your achievements, aspirations, and character. Use specific examples and a confident, authentic tone. Grab the reader's attention from the first sentence!
Have someone review your materials for clarity and grammar. Make sure your essay matches common prompts like these:
Why did you pick your current field of study?
How has being a _____ impacted your life?
How will this scholarship benefit your journey?
Tell us about your identity and why it's important to you
Tailor your essays and application materials to each scholarship's mission.
Highlight experiences, goals, and values that align with the organization's purpose while also showcasing your unique identity. Dialogue and personal anecdotes are great ways to do this.
For example, if a scholarship is asking you about what defines leadership and it's coming from an athletic association, you might want to use examples from sports to support your essay.
Use scholarship platforms or local resources to find scholarships that match your profile (e.g., demographics, field of study, extracurriculars, GPA, test scores, etc.).
Keep on the lookout for niche or local scholarships with fewer applicants to reduce competition. (Going Merry and Bold.org are best for this) Always apply for no-essay scholarships as they are the easiest to apply to. Check websites frequently for updates!
Emphasize your contributions to your community or extracurricular activities. Show the world how you've made your mark, no matter how small!
If possible, quantify your achievements ("raised $2,000 for charity" or "organized events for 100+ students")
