SETT

Joy Zabala's SETT framework has been used in educational settings for over a decade. In that time, many have taken the basic framework and used it as the basis for a range of student services. We offer our collection of SETT based questions as a guide to collaborative problem solving for students with special needs. It is important that the observers recognize that the student, environment and task are intertwined. Any change in one of these variables will effect the others. In order to fully understand the range of student needs, multiple observations are necessary across different environments. Only when sufficient data has been gathered can an appropriate profile for useful technology tools be built.

When observing the student, be sure to think about how you might leverage the student's strengths. How might you change elements of the environment to decrease the need for special technology intervention? Are the tasks under consideration really required or would they be nice to achieve? Have you exhausted the list of tools readily available?
