Artist Bio
Alicia Reynolds is a Japanese American mixed media sculpture artist who grew up in the south. She is creating a thesis body of work that explores themes of her unique intersecting cultures and the joy, challenges, and contradictions it brings. Her work utilizes various methods such as sculpting, casting resins, collaging, and implementing various mediums. Heavily influenced by Kawaii, Rococo, and Japanese food sculpture, her artwork presents difficult and hyper specific problems between her two cultures, historically and currently.
Artist Statement
My work involves the process of creating a physical manifestation of my lived experiences as a third culture kid growing up in the South. Being Japanese American and half white and even raised catholic has given me a unique perspective from which I analyze and critique orientalism and its implications on my life and Western culture in general. Through my work I am not only sharing my own experiences but connecting to a larger intergenerational collection of stories.
