Mission of the project
“ArtificiaL Intelligence Character with Expert (ALICE) Autism Care” provides guided Human-AI teaming role-playing sessions with interactive virtual standardized autistic individual and expert guide for comprehending and developing proficiency with complex professional and communication skills. The "ALICE Autism Care" is a part of the non-funded research and development project conducted to spread awareness and educate people about effective communicational skills to interact with autistic people, so that it eventually serves the aim of reducing the communication gap between individuals with and without autistic personalities.

It is a virtual training program that simulates face-to-face scenarios with an individual on the Autism spectrum. Each simulation aims to help build a better understanding of autistic individuals. This application focuses on showing individuals without autism spectrum disorder (ASD) how to better accommodate autistic people. Moreover, it aims to not only improve knowledge of autism spectrum disorder, but to help raise awareness of individuals that do not fit within society's model of thinking.

Additionally, this research is approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Wright State University. The volunteers are highly encouraged to participate in the research by downloading the mobile application and completing the sessions presented in it. The mobile application download link is provided below on this page. The participation in this research will help to achieve the objectives including but are not limited to 1) measure the effectiveness of ALICE Autism Care mobile Application 2) measure the capability of delivering the learning skills through such training modules 3) figure out the importance of integration of virtual expert instructor and real-time evaluation mechanism for delivering the learning skills 4) to figure out the importance of integration of virtual standardized individuals for delivering the learning skills.

Important Learning Modules
"ALICE Autism Care" application incorporates two important learning modules namely "Direct/Action-based Communication Session" and "Nonverbal Interfering Behavioral Communication Session". Participants will get an opportunity to interact with a virtual patient and learn effective communication ways to better interact with autistic people. A virtual expert instructor is also integrated into the application to provide instant review and evaluation of the participant's actions during the gameplay.

Direct/Action-based Communication Session
The Direct/Action-based Communication Session is an interactive training module that presents the importance of the utilization of direct communication speech while interacting with an autistic person. This session trains the participants to learn an effective way of communicating with autistic people via getting involved in a virtual scene with a first-person viewing experience. Moreover, participants play the role of a resident advisor, and a virtual expert guide (Dr. Erika Parker) appears to review and educate them during the session to improve their communication skills.

The Nonverbal Interfering Behavioral Communication Session is an interactive training module that presents the importance of addressing nonverbal interfering behaviors while conversing with an autistic person. This session trains the participants to learn an effective way of communicating with autistic people via getting involved in a virtual scene with a first-person viewing experience. Moreover, participants play the role of a resident advisor, and a virtual expert guide (Dr. Erika Parker) appears to review and educate them during the session to improve their communication skills.
