SESSION 2 -
November 7th.
Plains Cree and Ojibwe both exhibit ranking paradoxes between palatalization and some other phonological process.
Russell (1992) looks at the interaction of palatalization and epenthesis in Plains Cree and argues that in an inner domain of the word the rules must be ordered X before Y, but in an outer domain they must be ordered Y before X.
Lochbihler (2017, §4.4) examines the interaction of palatalization and final vowel deletion in Ojibwe and comes to a similar conclusion: rules must be ordered X before Y in an inner domain but Y before X in an outer domain. (We've suggested reading a portion of Lochbihler 2017 because it is short and adds some additional context for the reader. But much of the data she cites comes from a 1973 LI paper by Kaye & Piggott, which we will also attach for the interested reader.)
The papers for the reading are also provided here.
There's a lot to discuss here both in terms of the data and in terms of analyses, so I'm excited to see where the discussion takes us.

SESSION 3 -
We have one more session before winter break on December 5th.
There are big questions about word-prominence and prosody across Algonquian. Luckily, there is a hefty 2023 tome which is all about word-prominence in morphologically complex languages. The paper we suggest is in this volume and is all about Arapaho.
Shanti will lead us through the paper briefly and then we can discuss the similarities and differences of Arapaho to other accent systems.

SESSION 4 -
We have a new schedule for the new semester
We'd like to read chapter 4 from LeSourd's dissertation on Passamaquoddy. This chapter is all about metrical stress and interactions with schwas. It's a hefty chapter (p.71-157), but we will help summarize before we jump into discussion.
