I purchased the original long block from a local Alfa mechanic, Kevin Harper. He went out of his way to help and certainly knows his stuff. It had been sitting for quite a while, as you can see, but everything was pretty complete, even with a patina of grime and grease that had accumulated over a period of many, many years!
The block and head were already separated when I got it, so that saved me some headache!
The pistons and liners had already been removed from the block as well.
The original motor is a bit of a mongrel. Block serial number AR00512-75707 indicates a European origin, probably with carbs. But the front engine cover and water pump are from a SPICA motor. Block probably was forged in late 1972 or early 1973.
As with many Alfa motors over the years, parts get switched around. But everything looked to be in pretty good nick, with little corrosion and no cracks or fractures.
Liners, pistons, rings, and rod bearings will all be replaced with new ones, so condition is irrelevant. Connecting rods in good overall condition--just need a good cleaning!
Flywheel in good shape, with ring gear intact--no worn or broken teeth. Will clean up nicely.
Removing the front cover revealed timing gears also in good shape. Block stamps indicating 2.0L clearly visible on front of the block.
Crankshaft looked to be in good condition, with no obvious scoring. Will find out for sure after removal and good cleaning. Bearing caps look good too.
Oil pump appeared to be in good shape. Took it apart to check internal condition.
Checked tolerances on the impeller gears with feeler gauge, and everything was within spec. No wobble or discernible wear.
