Teaching undergraduates is deeply fulfilling and energizing for me. I enjoy inviting students to wonder about the complex processes of human development and introducing them to education research and learning sciences. In my teaching, I aim to create an inclusive environment in which all students can build community, make meaningful connections between the course and their lives, and walk away with deepened curiosity to continue learning.
Other principles that guide my teaching:
I extend empathy and care to promote students' holistic well-being.
I encourage students to engage deeply with different perspectives.
I use evidence from cognitive science to guide my teaching practices.
I am committed to continually improving as an educator.
Ultimately, by building meaningful classroom communities that welcome each student's unique perspective, I aim to model the kinds of instruction and care I hope my students will go on to create in their own classrooms and workplaces.
Trusting relationships are key to creating equitable, inclusive learning environments. In my classes, we build community in small moments, like starting class by sharing with a peer something we’re grateful for today, and in ongoing conversations, like working with consistent small groups over the semester to dig deeper into course content.
I design in-class activities and assignments that give students opportunities to make meaningful connections to course content. For example, students in one class wrote Minute Journals after each lecture in which they chose a key idea and explained how it could be applied to their current life or future career.
One marker of successful teaching is if students walk away with increased curiosity and motivation to continue learning. I invite students to practice asking questions that extend the course content, and I help them build skills to critically evaluate possible answers those questions.
