Project Title: WAU KAPAL COMMUNITY CENTER
Course: ARCH2130
Studio: 2A
Semester: Oct/Nov 2025
Site Location: Bukit Malawati / Dataran Malawati Area, Malaysia
Precedent Study: House Before House – Sou Fujimoto
The WAU KAPAL COMMUNITY CENTER was designed to revive the forgotten cultural game of Wau Kapal and create a vibrant public space for gathering, learning, and play. Inspired by Sou Fujimoto’s theory of architecture as an extension of nature, the project employs layered volumes, open terraces, and fluid circulation to blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor environments.
The architectural form is inspired by the flowing movement of the Wau Kapal kite tail, translating its dynamic curves into spatial experiences that guide movement and encourage social interaction. The building acts as a cultural hub where visitors can engage in workshops, exhibitions, and interactive learning experiences while reconnecting with local heritage.
