Alexey V. Rakov is a senior researcher at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology with 23 years' of experience making our lives better. Specializing in microbiology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics, Dr. Rakov uses that expertise to to gain new knowledge. He is best known for his work in molecular epidemiology of foodborne (specifically Salmonella) and tickborne infections (specifically Rickettsia).
Dr. Rakov received his Doctor of Medicine degree in therapy from Pacific State Medical University. He holds his Ph.D. from the Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology under the supervision of acclaimed Prof. Felix N. Shubin, recipient of the USSR state prize. His dissertation was on the clinical and microbiological features of Salmonella infection. Dr. Rakov completed his post-doctoral training at New York Medical College/University of Mississippi Medical Center, Harbin Medical University, and, finally the University of Pennsylvania under D. Ashley Robinson, Shu-Lin Liu, and Dieter M. Schifferli. He has served as Associate Professor at School of Biomedicine at Far Eastern Federal University and was senior researcher at Somov Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology. After completing his postdoctoral research, Dr. Rakov joined Central Research Institute of Epidemiology in 2021, a pioneering institution in the field of molecular diagnostics (MDx) in Russia with its own production facilities, diagnostic and clinical centers.
By focusing on professional growth and experience in the field, Dr. Rakov has been able to put the M.D., Ph.D. extensive training at the best universities to good use. Over the years, his strengths at the Somov Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology has garnered some recognition by other experts in the field. Dr. Rakov may spend his days in the lab, but it's а thirst for discovery and a desire to pursue a specific goal that gets him up in the morning.
Dr. Rakov has published extensively in the field of microbial epidemiology and has more than 60 original articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is an editor-in-chief for the Journal of Bioinformatics and Genomics since 2019 and is a reviewer for more than 40 peer-reviewed journals from Springer Nature Group, Oxford University Press, Cell Press, Elsevier, Wiley, Public Library of Science (PLoS), Frontiers Media, Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), BioMed Central (BMC), Mary Ann Liebert, Thieme Medical Publishers, Bentham Science Publishers. He has an H-index of 10 and has over 60 peer-reviewed publications.
In 2008, he was awarded the Golden Medal of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.
