Proposal Title: The Role of the Locus Coeruelus in Cognitive Aging
Specific Aims:
Aim 1: To investigate the temporal sequence of locus coerleus (LC) changes with advancing age. We hypothesize that imaging indications of LC whiite matter disruption precede indications of LC degeneration, such that white matter connectivity will decrease stepwise across young-old, middle-old, and oldest-old age groups, whereas LC integrity will be reduced only in the oldest-old group.
Aim 2: To investigate the association between connectivity of the LC and cognitive changes in older adults. We hypothesize that LC-nucleus basalis of Meynert and LC-transentorhinal cortex disconnectivity will be related to concomitant reductions in attentional control and memory, respectively, and that these associations will be stronger with advanced age.
