Biography

Alexandra Gemitzi was born in Thessaloniki (Greece) in 1971. She graduated from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) in 1993 with a Bachelor degree in Geology and a Master of Science in Groundwater Engineering from University of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) in 1995.  She obtained a Doctorate in 2002 from the Department of Civil Engineering of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, sponsored by the National Scholarship Foundation.  She is a Professor at the Department of Environmental Engineering of Democritus University of Thrace, Greece. Before starting her academic career, she has worked as geologist for almost ten years in the private and public sector. Her main teaching and research interests are related to environmental modelling, remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems. Her research focuses on the simulation and assessment of environmental systems, climate and land use change effects and the prediction and risk assessment of extreme natural phenomena or natural disasters. Her published work features over 40 publications in peer reviewed journals and over 50 conference presentations. Currently she coordinates the EU project WATERLINE (https://www.chistera.eu/projects/waterline ,  https://waterlineproject.eu/). She has been awarded the Fulbright Scholarship for the 2023-2024 Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program.

EMPLOYMENT – SCIENTIFIC EXPERIENCE

1999 – 2001: Contract geologist in the Greek Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration, Xanthi Department, Greece.

2001 – 2007: Geologist at the Water Resources Management Department, Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. 

2003-2007: Contract lecturer at the Department of Environmental Engineering, School of Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace (D.U.Th.), Greece. 

April 2007-July 2011: Lecturer at the Department of Environmental Engineering, School of Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace (D.U.Th.), Greece. 

July 2011 – December 2016: Assistant Professor at the Department of Environmental Engineering, School of Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace (D.U.Th.), Greece.

December 2016 - September 2022: Associate Professor at the Department of Environmental Engineering, School of Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace (D.U.Th.), Greece. Research area: Applications of Geographic Information Systems and modeling tools in Environmental Engineering (Goevernment gazette 1274/14-12-2016).

July 2015 - February 2016: Visiting fellow at the Water Research Center of the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.
