My capstone project turned into a non-profit organization.
In the winter of 2023 & 2024, I decided to join a class that offered something different than many of my other classes. They offered the chance to "Develop a plan to investigate equity and social justice issues through community-engaged project work". Each student did just that, each student had a diverse capstone project they did.
I knew at the beginning that I wanted to work with non-native English students. However, I had no idea where to start. We were four weeks in and I still was struggling trying to figure things out. Honestly, I was scared because my thoughts went from "Can I do this?" to "Let's save the world". How am I supposed to help a whole community of people?
I then went to a career panel that the DESJ professors was putting on. I met a women named Arra who is a "Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Manager at the Center for Human Services in Shoreline; Vice Chair of DEI Commission, City of Lynnwood. Arra is an EvCC and Central Washington University alumna." (EVCC)
Arra connected me with a start-up non-profit called The House of Wisdom where I started to learn more about the community's needs. I also took part in a survey my DESJ class was hosting at Connect Casino Road. It was based on what the parents wanted for their youth but in that survey, you could hear that yes the parents wanted more youth programs but they also wanted more resources for themselves.
During the end of winter 2024 my plan was starting to form into something bigger.
I started to think about who in the community I could connect with and I started to form a relationship with Connect Casino Road. I began to share my ideas with them as well as Jacob N who is a professor at the college. I came up with the idea of partnering with Connect Casino Road and other community partners to create a workshop program. This workshop would come to an already established community that could assist in communicating with the public about different workshops that could be available. I then thought this was a program that could be something, a program that could last. A program that would build a trusting relationship with the community.
This is where I came up with the We see you, We hear you organization.
"People want to be heard and seen."
I started thinking about something that everyone needed to know. Everyone needs to learn how to create a resume. Here is the breakdown of what this workshop would look like.
Create a variety of resumes for every level. Example below.
Invite someone who hires people to share insight on what an interview process looks like.
Provide free USB and paper copies of a fill it out your self resume.
Provided resources that offer free computer usage. Primarily have someone from the local library come in and speak to the community about signing up for a library card. Which allows free access to computers.
The event took place on May 31, 2024 at the Keeps Dreams Alive Foundation. I made major adjustments to my original event ideas.
I made these changes because after talking with someone who advocates for the people I learned that my ideas are great but, is this what the community truly needs and wants?
I took a step back and thought about the name "We See You...... We Hear You". I needed to hear the community and what they wanted. The event became a talk time and an opportunity to hear this community and their needs. I sat and listened to these women for 3 hours and learned so much of what they needed. This is what they need.
