Ethics are an important part of leadership and work ethics. In a previous employment, I was held to maintain patient confidentiality. There was an occasion when, during my assessment, the patient informed me that they were in a domestic violence situation and were unsure who to turn to. Since there were children involved in the household, I was unsure who to confide in, as it was a personal matter that the individual did not feel comfortable disclosing. Unaware of how to navigate the situation, I had a decision to make regarding the safety of the children. Even though the person didn't want to report the situation and just wanted someone to talk to about it, I was ethically obligated to inform the patient that I had to call social services because the children were in an unsafe household. The individual was upset with the decision, but not saying anything would have gone against my work ethics.
