I have always dreamed of having a career which combines my love for math and my proficiency in science. That is where my interest in engineering came from. My realization of this interest happened in middle school, when I took a career aptitude test. I realized that the field of engineering was a very good option for me, and I have been excited about it ever since. I also have been interested in the field of finance, but I feel that I will have more opportunities with engineering.
In my freshman year of high school, I was enrolled in the Academy of Finance at Chopticon High School, and I took the Principles of Finance class. I chose to enroll myself in this program because of my interest in finance, and I learned many valuable life skills throughout the year. However, I could not continue the Academy of Finance because I was accepted into the Engineering program at the James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center, and I decided that this would be more beneficial to me. The engineering program would give me hands-on experience with the engineering process, and I would hopefully finish the program with many certifications. So far, this program has taught me even further the importance of working as a team and how to efficiently brainstorm.
I have participated in a variety of sports in the past, including football and soccer. Each of these taught me unique skills, but also taught me how to work effectively in a group, how to think on my feet, and how to communicate quickly and efficiently. In April of 2023, I was hired to work as a team member at Fitzie’s Marina Restaurant and Pub in Compton, Maryland. As this was my very first job, I gained a lot more experience and knowledge from working there. I learned how to avoid distractions, focus on the task at hand, and how to balance school, work, and home life.
After high school, I plan to immediately go to college. Whether I attend a community college or a four year college is still unsure, because there are benefits and drawbacks to both. Either way, I plan to get my Bachelor’s in Engineering, and maybe get a higher degree. I might alter my plan or change it entirely depending on what happens between then and now. Maybe new opportunities will open up and I will choose to take that path, or maybe some challenges will hold me back from following my plan.
Once I achieve my career goal, I would like to move immediately into the workforce. One good job opportunity available to me is the military bases here in Maryland. They are constantly in need of more engineers, they pay well, and they offer many opportunities to employees. As an engineer on base, I will design and construct many things to aid the military and society as a whole. My goal in life is to make a positive impact in the world and to show my capability.
