Surfin' On A Coffin Lid - My wife and I have been spending our summers on the west coast the last ten years, and one of our favorite destinations is Newport, Oregon. Last summer I was introduced to Darrel Templeton who is a local singer songwriter. We hit it off, and he showed me all the cool places to play in the area. One such area was in Agate Beach. This beach is known for its good surfing because of its great waves. We decided to trade songs for the fun of it. He took my song Humboldt Honey, and I took his song Coffin Lid. I got home and realized that without a little more information about the beach, it wouldn't connect outside his area. That made me add a couple of verses, rearrange the entire song, and give it a south Texas twist that better fit my style of playing. It's an amazing song about folks that were using codffin lids as surfboards back in early 1900's. I even used some slang from the time like "bearcat". Google that one.
