What is Albemarle County Indoor Percussion?

Established in 2017, Albemarle County Indoor Percussion (ACIP) is a competitive indoor drumline located in Charlottesville, VA. The goal of ACIP is to not only provide members an opportunity to learn about the activity of indoor percussion, but to also provide an opportunity to learn about percussion and to expand members current percussion knowledge. Joining members knowledge of percussion ranges from no experience to years of experience. Most members are students who attend either Monticello High School, Albemarle High School or Western Albemarle High School, but that is not a requirement to join. ACIP is open to anyone between the ages of 8th and 12th grade, who reside in Albemarle County. ACIP competes in the Atlantic Indoor Association (AIA) and Winter Guard International (WGI) circuits in the Percussion Scholastic A Class (PSA) as Albemarle County Combined Schools.

What is Indoor Percussion?

An indoor percussion ensemble or indoor drumline consists of the marching percussion (or battery) and front ensemble (pit or frontline) sections of a marching band or drum corps and sometimes includes a visual ensemble (members who perform, but don't play an instrument). The only exceptions are in concert divisions (e.g. Percussion Scholastic Concert Open) where the marching line is absent and the ensemble consists entirely of a pit. Indoor percussion marries elements of music performance, marching, and theater; thus, the activity is often referred to as percussion theater. Although most indoor percussion ensembles are affiliated with high schools, there are also many independent groups that draw participants from a large area. Independent groups typically start rehearsing in October, while high school groups typically start after their fall marching band season ends. Because of this, the activity is often called winter percussion or winterline.
