The Albany Birth Justice Storytelling Project received the Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Research from University Libraries at the University at Albany, SUNY. This award included a cash prize of $200 per researcher, amounting in a total award of $1600.

A majority of the prize money was donated to local organizations that do birth justice work. Recipients donated parts of their awards to the following organizations:

  • BirthNet: Albany-based organization whose mission is to eliminate the inequities in birth outcomes for all childbearing people and to ensure that all birthing families receive respectful and supportive maternity and infant care.

  • Beauty2TheStreetz: A nonprofit that supports the population of Black homeless men and women living on Skid Row in LA. Shirley Raines, founder, provides makeovers and showers to homeless women in order to boost their confidence. Recently the organization has helped provide the homeless with tents to sleep in, portable showers, meals, and personal hygiene products to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

  • Loveland Foundation: An organization that supports Black women and girls in receiving therapy and gaining access to mental health services.
