Unit 105 is one of four entities of American Legion Post 105 Redwood City –Legion, Auxiliary, Sons and Riders.
January 2026 - On January 31, American Legion Post 105 Family hosted the commemorative ceremony of honoring the Four Chaplains–remembering their selfless duty and bravery in the face of certain death with the sinking of the USAT Dorchester on February 3, 1943 after being torpedoed by a German submarine.
Once all life vests were distributed, the four chaplains removed their own vests and handed them to frightened young sailors. As the ship went down, survivors in nearby rafts could see the four chaplains--arms linked and braced against the slanting deck. Their voices could also be heard offering prayers. Of the 904 aboard, only 230 survived.
Reading the tribute of each chaplain were: Reverend Katie Goetz for Reverend George Fox (Methodist), Legionnaire Allan Hirsch for Rabbi Alexander Goode (Judaism), Chaplain Joe Serrano for Reverend Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed), and Father Michael Quinn for Father John Washington (Roman Catholic).
Cmdr. George Smith introduced the Family speakers reading the story of the Dorchester: Legionnaire William Jackson, Jr., Auxiliary 2nd VP Carol Bagley, Sons member Alex Cooke, and Riders Director Andrew Trapani.
Over 100 guests attended, including representatives from Congressman Kevin Mullin and County Supervisor Lisa Gauthier, American Legion Riders from Hollister, Patriot Guards, Post 105 Family’s Scouts of America Troop 10, Golden Gate Young Marines, and the general public.
January 2026 - Ladies of American Legion Post 105 Family donated school supplies and $580 worth of food to stock College of San Mateo Veterans Resource & Opportunity Center's (VROC) pantry. Accepting the donation is VROC's Program Service Coordinator Marcos Baluyut-Hand. The Foster City community also donated a large quantity of toiletries and first aid supplies for the Center to create care kits for their veteran students. The Center provides computer access, study hall, kitchenette, and a small lounge area for students to socialize and network with fellow veterans.

December 2025 - San Mateo Troop 61802 usually delivers much appreciated cards on or before Veterans Day. This year they decided to create holiday cards for VA patients. In a new partnership, Foster City Girl Scouts Troops 61741 and 61742 (older and younger Girl Scouts) created holiday cards for the first time. Troop mom Jenni is one of our newest Auxiliary members as well with seven uncles who've served as veterans!
December 2025. U105 fulfilled its Annual holiday gift delivery at the VA. Thanks to our Legionnaires and Sons, they’ve helped sponsor the veterans we were assigned to buy gifts for–fulfilling their wishlists. U105 is one of six local American Legion Auxiliary Units in San Mateo County which adopted Bldg. 331 at VA-Menlo Park. As always, we enjoyed the interactions, smiles, and chats today.
