There are several projects on peatlands on the go, as well as in the development of a GEF8 proposal on peatland rehabilitation. A key interest of mine is in mapping wetlands using remote sensing as well as GIS techniques as well as mapping wetland change, and quantifying damage to wetland systems caused by anthropogenic drivers.
This Water Research Commission funded project aimed to
Estimate the potential loss of peat in three burnt South African peatlands
Quantify ecosystem services provided by the peatlands
Develop guidelines for the prevention, management and rehabilitation of degraded peatlands
Develop protocols to control peat fires.

This Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany funded project aimed, amongst other things, to produce a short film on South African peatlands, what we know about them and the threats they face.
