Alexander Technique sessions carried out in Highlands and Morayshire

The Alexander Technique is a series of individual lessons that teach a 'body-friendly' approach to life. Over the years many of us learn unconscious habits which interfere with natural co-ordination. The aim of the Alexander Technique is to identify and remove these habitual movements, with the aim of restoring natural poise.

In the lessons you will learn some functional anatomy regarding the position and movement potential of different joints and about the appropriate alignment and co-ordination of your body. Using a combination of verbal explanation and guided adjustments the client will learn awareness of and how to release unnecessary tension or fixed habits. This leads to healthier and more natural patterns of movement. You will also be shown the Alexander rest position which, if used daily, helps to release accumulated tension and strengthens body awareness whether at rest or in activity. Bit by bit your ability to recognise and improve your co-ordination expands and you will have more choice in how to move naturally in different situations.

Particular applications include:

Health Problems

Many complaints such as back and neck problems are strongly influenced by poor posture and excess tension. Unless these causes are addressed, removal of symptoms by drugs or manipulation may be short lived. Even if the Alexander Technique on its own does not entirely relieve pain, the release of tension and improved use will always be helpful and will support other approaches.

Injury Prevention

Misuse and bad co-ordination over a period of time produces many physical complaints. Sudden or strenuous actions such as digging, housework at home or when lifting at work can lead to debilitating injuries. For office work, good ergonomic layout of desks, chairs and keyboards is important but needs to be supported by good posture and co-ordination.

Posture, Appearance and Self-Awareness

Allowing yourself to be body-aware (or 'open and expanded' as it's known in the Alexander Technique) not only improves appearance, health and confidence but can also give a sense of being 'more in touch with yourself'. This can enhance self-expression and presentation skills.

The Alexander Technique can also be applied to:

Performance in Sport and the Arts

The Alexander Technique has been an essential part of training at major music and drama schools for over fifty years. The adding of unnecessary tension can interfere with performance and expression. The same principles apply in sport and result in improved performance and less injury.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy, birth and the care of a new baby can place great strain on the mother's body and if misuse is already present, can lead to back-ache and other problems. Lessons in the Technique can be of great support throughout.

The Technique is concerned with general co-ordination and quality of movement and can benefit anyone motivated to apply it in their lives. Personal reasons for taking a course of lessons include health problems, to be free from pain, injury prevention, posture, presentation and appearance, and also performance in sport and the arts.
