The owners of the Milestone property have been attempting to rezone the property along Kipling and Alameda to allow for high-density, high-rise apartments to be developed for the better part of the past two decades. The Alameda Home Owners Association (now known as the Alameda Homes Community Association) engaged the residents and even secured legal counsel to protect the current zoning of the property. Once again, the neighborhood is facing rezoning of the neighborhood. Context is important, and it's important to note that while the Alameda Homes HOA fought to protect zoning, they also came along side the owners of the Milestone property to build high-density housing that would align with the surrounding developments, proposing that patio homes, duplexes, and townhomes to be developed. Milestone refused to negotiate, and instead planted hay on the land. Milestone made the latter choice to escape the duty of paying property taxes. Had the owners of the Milestone property paid taxes on the full property value of the land during this time, they would have paid the city approximately $2.5 million. Join your Community Association in making sure that the City doesn't value developers who don't pay taxes over their citizens who do.
