NOTE TO TEACHERS AND STUDENTS:

Welcome to the National History Day program and contest in Alameda County!  Students all over the U.S. each year research a topic in history and relate it to the annual theme. There are a wide range of topics available and many different methods for publishing research.  Students can write a historical paper, produce an exhibit, create a documentary, publish a website, produce a podcast or act out a performance. If you are wondering why you should help your students participate in history day, watch this 3-minute video: https://youtu.be/683GBqllgk8

After completing a project, students have another choice:  whether to participate or to compete.  Winners from schools may move on to the county contest; winners at county may move on to National History Day - California; the state, and winners at state may move onto National History Day. Ultimately, the project is about learning. Whether you are a history or language arts or English teacher, doing some type of history day project teaches important research skills aligned to the Common Core and the new California State History Social Science Framework, and is the ultimate hands-on, inquiry based, project learning experience for students. Please use and modify the lessons below as needed.

MEMO TO STUDENTS:

There are few experiences as exciting as participating in history day!   We hope the information on this site helps you to create your very best History Day Project. We look forward to seeing you at Alameda County History Day!

What is National History Day?

National History Day, is a year-long educational program that encourages students to explore local, state, national, and world history. After selecting a historical topic that relates to an annual theme, students conduct extensive research by using libraries, archives, museums, and oral history interviews. They analyze and interpret their findings, draw conclusions about their topics' significance in history, and create final projects that present their work. These projects can be entered into a series of competitions, from the local to the national level, where they are evaluated by historians and educators. More information can be found at https://www.nhd.org/

National History Day in California

Alameda County History Day is a partner with National History Day - California (NHD-CA). NHD-CA sponsors the state-wide competition, provides professional development to schools and districts, and supports students in their research and project development. The NHD-CA program allows students in forth and fifth grades to create a poster or podcast and students in sixth through twelfth grades to create a documentary, exhibit, historical paper, performance, podcast, or website.

The state competition will be held on April 19-21, 2024. For more information, please visit https://www.nhdca.org/
