Topic: CSE Higher Education in India
Time: Sunday, January 08, 2023 (16:00 – 17:15)
Description:
Mentoring science and engineering students constantly poses profound challenges to educationists as the technology that lies on the frontline today, quickly passes into obsolescence tomorrow. In fact, such rapid changes are more perceptible in the discipline of Computer Science and Engineering as they pervade every nook and corner of human civilization.
The last seven decades have witnessed tremendous advances in computing and communications technologies. The semiconductor (r)evolution, the emergence of digital eco-space, the exponential growth of hardware/software systems, computer architecture, VLSI, and high performance computing gathered better understanding of theory of computing and algorithms, programming languages, pattern recognition, image processing and computer vision, natural language processing, robotics, AI, Machine learning, big data analytics, etc. We have also enjoyed the benefit of the Internet, wireless and sensor networks, cyber-physical systems, the Internet of Things (IoT) while raising concerns to dependability, security and privacy issues. Now, we are ready to experience a transition into the quantum regime in near future that is likely to bring a complete paradigm shift in computational thinking.
Alongside, industry and economic globalization have impacted significantly research funding, sponsored projects, job opportunities and employment for students. The university education should not only help students walk through the colorful technological history but also incorporate new teaching methods, and innovate tools for effective learning experience, provide techniques for translating theory to practice so students get tuned to such rapidly changing landscape and earn life-long learning skills to cater to the need for society, academia, industry, and government in their professional or entrepreneurship careers.
Prof. A. K. Choudhury was a legendary educator and mentor, who not only pioneered computer science and engineering education in Calcutta University and India but also mentored numerous students inside and outside the classroom helping them reach for the stars. His birth centenary celebration will remain incomplete without meaningful exchange of views on teaching and mentoring. The honorable panel members are passionate educationists who will address key issues facing higher education in computer science and engineering and discuss the future roadmap including the challenges and opportunities.

Topic: Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Time: Monday, January 09, 2023 (16:00 – 17:15)
Description:
Professor Arun Kumar Choudhury was an innovator at heart and a creative genius, who built in 1950’s a fully operational Analog computer using vacuum tube valves. He was the source of inspiration for many of us to think entrepreneurially. We are also grateful to him for his far-sighted vision to establish in 1980 the Department of Computer Science in the `Rajabazar Science College’ campus at the University of Calcutta. This department was among the first few in India offering B.Tech. degree in computer science.
Prof. AKC’s steadfast commitment and dedication made the Computer Science department a place for higher learning and creative thinking. Over more than 40 years, numerous B.Tech., M. Tech., and Ph.D. students have graduated from this department with many distinctions and accolades.
While for majority of students, especially in the easter part of India, the traditional ambition used to be to go for higher education or get a corporate job with handsome emoluments and technology involvement in working life, the mindset has been slowly changing. Students and various stakeholders now dream of becoming job givers rather than job seekers. The Govt. of India is also supportive of providing substantial funds for incubation centres in the premiere institutions to help create start-up culture and businesses.
To commemorate Prof. AKC’s legacy of innovation and out of box thinking, this timely panel has been organized. An outstanding panel of experts will share their first-hand experiences on various aspects of entrepreneurship journey including success and failure stories, challenges and opportunities ahead. The participants will gain insightful ideas and courage how to think out of the box to generate innovative ideas with strong technology transfer potential and social impacts, leading to entrepreneurship ventures.
