Professor Arun Kumar Choudhury (January 6, 1923 – September 6, 1987) was the founding Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Calcutta University, during 1980-1983. He is regarded as a legend in the fields of Electronics and Computer Science by the national and international forums of scientists for his truly pioneering contributions to a number of areas including Analog Computers, Circuit Theory, Control Systems Design, Switching Theory and Logic Design, Fault-tolerant Computing, Graph Theory and Computer Architecture. Of particular mention is the fact that he started research in each of these fields when there was hardly any proper infrastructure for learning and undertaking research in electronics and computing throughout the whole country.
The most notable contributions of Professor Choudhury lie in that, not only did he supervise the research work of more than 60 Ph.D. students and two D.Sc. students, but also was successful in perpetuating his dynamic vision of research and education in the evolving areas through numerous research schools formed by a large group of his students in India and abroad. His students have been established as internationally renowned scientists and educationists in their respective fields. Apart from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering founded by him in 1980, the “A. K. Choudhury School of Information Technology” was established in Calcutta University in 2005, which carries his name as one of the ways of acknowledging his contributions and showing honour and respect to this great visionary, legendary researcher, and teacher.
To express homage and respect for Professor A. K. Choudhury, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the A. K. Choudhury School of Information Technology at the University of Calcutta, along with all his students and admirers, have jointly planned to organize a two-day symposium on January 8-9, 2023 as one of the events for commemorating his birth centenary.
The symposium is planned to comprise keynote talks, invited talks, panel discussions on entrepreneurship and higher education, student research poster competition, state-of-the-art research results by world-renowned computer scientists and the roadmaps to future research works in the broad domains of Electronics and Computer Science, both of which were initiated by Professor Choudhury at the University of Calcutta as early as in 1950’s.
