Aisha Wewala is an interdisciplinary artist based in Vancouver BC’s lower mainland, on the Katzie First Nations traditional territory. She has extensive training in theatre, dance, and music; she was awarded The ACT Arts Council scholarship in theatre, in memory of Amy Wallis (2019). Her work is collaborative and non-hierarchical, devising with different types of people from her closest friends, the oldest members of her family, to children. Her work often touches on themes of family, growth, altered reality, and dreams. An essential part of her performance-making is to enjoy the process and have fun. She views all her pieces as ongoing and living projects; they do not end after a show because that is only another part of the process. She makes work to evoke an authentic connection to the audience, whether that be through nostalgia, fear, or both. She works with the concepts of world-building, exaggerating the everyday, and dream logic. If the concept and moment of creating is enjoyable, it’s worth exploring. She wants her performances to create a memorable experience for the audience; something they can leave with and not leave behind. She is currently pursuing her BFA in Theatre & Performance at Simon Fraser University, School for the Contemporary Arts.
