Many studies show that high quality masks & air filtration/ventilation are some of the most effective tools at reducing COVID transmission. Why are you deliberately leaving these out of your recommendations? Please give the people the information they need to protect themselves.

Perhaps that's why #HICPAC seemed so determined to discard safe N95 #masks and ignored #aerosols and #ventilation. The public comments made schooled them. Will they and you listen, Dr. Cohen? We want better protection! #CovidIsAirborne

.@DrJudyStone @luckytran The CDC doesn’t like the use of effective masking. Years before the pandemic, the CDC wrote a blog post on how using elastomeric respirators during pandemics would save countless lives but were not well known & would be overlooked if they failed to promote them. https://blogs.cdc.gov/niosh-science-blog/2017/07/06/elastomerics/… https://cdc.gov/niosh/npptl/images/100years/UnderstandDifference3.jpg… Years into the pandemic, @NYTScience @AndrewJacobsNYT released this artivle explaining how 1000s of HCWs died due to the CDC refusing to promote the importance of elastomeric respirators. https://nytimes.com/2022/07/03/health/covid-ppe-masks-health-care.html… The attached quote is @BarackObama’s CDC Director @DrTomFrieden getting upset with a May 2020 NYTs article also attached where the CDC, FDA, OSHA confirmed the public had the right to know about elastomeric respirators but said it was the responsibility of other agencies to ensure they became known. It’s also not like the CDC can pretend they didn’t know that refusing to ensure HCWs knew about elastomeric respirators would cost lives since the same day the May 2020 NYTs article was published, NIOSH Director John Howard testified to the risks of N95 reuse & how hospitals were ONLY to reuse N95s if they couldn’t find elastomeric respirators not instead of. His exact quote is, “I think one of the issues that I would like to emphasize at the get-go is that decontamination of an N95 respirator is not the first step in optimizing the use of respirators for healthcare workers. It is literally the last step. Every other type of respirator that we recommend in healthcare, a PAPR, an elastomeric, et cetera, be used before you decide to decontaminate your supply of N95s. The science about decontamination is relatively new, and I mean, very new.” https://congress.gov/event/116th-congress/house-event/LC66152/text… Now if you go on @CDCgov account and search “elastomeric respirator” you won’t find 1 instance of a post promoting elastomeric respirators. We are now headed into a new wave a soon to be the 5th year of the pandemic, while the public is still lead to believe masks don’t play an important role & that if you do want to mask you should consider a cloth mask but not consider an elastomeric respirator. https://cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/types-of-masks.html… Whats worse is years after the CDC published these studies on how uncovered exhalation valves provide better source control than surgical masks, the CDC is still spreading misinformation that it is dangerous to use respirators with valves due to being unable to offer acceptable source control protection while also recommending surgical masks as the gold standard for infection control. https://cdc.gov/niosh/docs/2021-107/default.html… The CDC’s communication failures on elastomerics didn’t only have a large impact on HCWs in the US, Canadian HCWs could’ve all had elastomeric respirators since the 1st wave but since the Canadian government didn’t know their importance, they remained unused in government stockpiles since the first wave. Hopefully great experts from @TheWHN like @nerodenc @DrEricDing @yaneerbaryam will eventually be able to convince the CDC to ensure they correct these failures immediately by holding a major press conference so those that want to stay safe from this new wave don’t overlooked the masks that would give them the best chances of avoiding infection. Will the CDC ever explain what the advantage of reusing N95s for weeks at a time vs following their recommendations to use more protective masks that had been safely used by infectious disease HCWs since the 90s. The CDC is not the only agency that has explaining to do, OSHA told their own inspectors to use elastomeric respirators instead of N95s while visiting workplaces in outbreak & their original Covid workplace guidelines from Feb/Mar 2020 we’re to use elastomeric respirators since they were more comfortable & protective than N95s + to avoid N95 reuse at all cost. Why did this knowledge not make its way to the general public? https://osha.gov/sites/default/files/publications/OSHA3990.pdf… https://osha.gov/memos/2021-03-12/updated-interim-enforcement-response-plan-coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19… @dgurdasani1 @AbraarKaran @Globalbiosec @brosseau_lisa @kprather88.

One of the most bewildering aspects of the federal response has been the lack of production and promotion of elastomeric N95s. This was the CDC's concept for a respiratory pandemic when I was Director. http://nyti.ms/2B8zYa7

I’m an engineer, scientist & advocate raising awareness of effective masks & overlooked negligence + communication failures by the USG. All opinions are my own.
