FAQs

Q: How old does the skater need to be?

A: Most group programs start at age 3 or 4. I work with skaters of all ages, children through adults!

Q: What should my skater wear?

A: Recreational skates, figure skates, or hockey skates are all acceptable. Helmets are mandatory for small children and strongly encouraged for beginners at any age. Hockey skaters should wear full gear, but sticks/pucks are dependent on getting the OK from the rink manager. I also recommend warm fitted layers, thinner socks (so the feet don't fall asleep), and warm gloves.

Q: Where can I buy skating supplies?

A: For recreational/beginner skates, I recommend Play It Again Sports or Dick's Sporting Goods. For skaters looking to make a more serious investment, I highly recommend Cooke's Skate Supply in Wilmington, MA. Clothing and accessories can be purchased at most stores, Amazon, or FigureSkatingStore.

Q: What else should a skater bring to a lesson?

A: Water, a towel to be used for wiping off skate blades, soft "soakers" (terrycloth guards kept on the blades to prevent rusting), and hard guards (for walking around the rink and/or outside).

Q: How do I get the most out of my pair of skates?

A: Skates should feel snug to the foot, be tied tightly while still allowing for deep knee bends, but ankles should not be turning in. Skates should be sharpened for roughly every 10 hours of skating time. I recommend Cooke’s Skate Supply, Wilmington, MA.
