If you made your way to this page, I believe that you are probably more than aware of the controversial 2.4Liter Chevy Equinox Engine, and the major issues that come along with it.
A lot of people do not know that some awesome aftermarket companies actually make pistons that solve the oil consumption issues with these engines, and timing kits that will never fail, permitting that the operator is properly maintaining the vehicle (Change your oil every 3,000 miles. The dealer will tell you 5,000... The dealership also likes when your car needs major repairs. Keep that in mind)
In today's modern vehicles, the manufactures are being hit with strict emission standards, which has caused them to make major reiterations to the fuel injections systems. These reiterations are what we call GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection). In the newest of the new, they are even putting what is called a GPF (Gasoline Particulate Filter) on the car, post catalytic converter.
They make these systems out to be "NO BIG DEAL"... When the truth is, these systems we are mentioning are ENGINE KILLERS. They are reducing the carbon that comes out of the exhaust on these modern vehicles with the above-mentioned technologies, however, common sense says... when it is not exiting the tailpipe, where else can it go? Thats right... directly into your engine, and into your exhaust filtration systems.
These engine killing devices are extremely touchy devices that can easily be clogged, such as EGR and GPFs. And with the gasoline direct injection systems, thr fuel injector is no longer positioned towards the back of the intake valve, like on the good ol' port injection engines of yesterday. The fuel injectors are now located directly above the piston, much like a diesel engine. They are equipped with a low pressure fuel pump and high pressure fuel-injection pump. This may all seem fine... but its not. Gasoline engines have much tighter tolerances than diesel engines, and with nothing to clean the intake valve (FUEL), they tend to load up with carbon rather quickly.
This carbon build up will cause all sorts of problems, such as valve closure issues, carbon build-up on the pistons to the point where EGTs are affected causing piston damage and piston ring lock-up.
The cars of today MUST be maintained often if you wish to see a long-term life of use.
PLEASE. Change your oil every 3000 miles. Monitior oil consumption by taking the time to check your oil every 1000 miles. This might seem like "work" to a lot of you, but my favorite philosophy is "Spend the time in the front, save the money in the back"
It's a very true statement!
