Lab gathers bright undergraduates to closely study new media, culture, technologies, and childhoods while gaining qualitative research experience. Lab scholars also build understandings of graduate school and other elements of the "informal curriculum."

YSM Research Lab has welcomed more than 100 talented undergraduate scholars since its inception in January 2016.

Outside of lab, Youth + Media Research Lab scholars have been recognized for their outstanding scholarship and civic involvement, and they have won awards for their research at local and regional conferences. Many have gone on from lab to enroll in graduate school or advanced certification programs. Most are now working with youth in our community as researchers, teachers, school psychologists, counselors, and in numerous other important ways.

Lab scholars have served as technical assistants in Tech Talks we offer for the campus community and for the wider Fresno community to support awareness, critical thinking, and critical media literacy. Scholars present results from their collaborative lab research in some of these forums, spotlighting their findings and accomplishments while inspiring peers and neighbors to consider research involvement.

Our lab regularly does outings to collectively attend academic lectures and events on campus that extend the reach of our learning.

For example, we frequent the Provost's Lecture Series to learn from Fresno State faculty, including philosophy professor Dr. Carolyn Cusick, who inspired us to see questions we ask in lab as part of wider deliberations upon ontology, epistemology, and axiology, founder of wonderful Project Rebound, criminology professor Dr. Emma Hughes, and Dr. Steven Church, Fresno State's MFA in Creative Writing coordinator, who read his work and explained processes he takes part in as a creative writer.

During COVID, lab scholars collaboratively attend and discuss virtual talks held around the world, including those hosted by University of Michigan's Center for Ethics, Society, and Computing (ESC) and the University of Illinois' Just Infrastructures series.

YSM Research Lab conceptualizes both youth and social media as cultural constructs informed by policies, people, and practices unbounded by discipline, and lab scholars understand that, to learn, we need to show up, be part of communities, and listen. In this spirit, we read widely and actively attend many talks!
