〖Aikido for Beginners〗
Aikido, like other martial arts such as judo, kendo, and karate, does not involve matches. Daily practice begins with silent contemplation, followed by confirmation of basic movements by one person, and then by pairs of two people who divide into offensive and defensive (plus counterattack) and apply designated techniques to each other. While being aware of their own center line and the opponent's center line, they execute techniques using natural and effortless movements and circular footwork. In practice, this is repeated over and over again to improve the accuracy of the movements and techniques.
Beginning students are first taught ukemi, stance, and body movements such as a stance and timing, as well as how to apply force. Then they learn and practice basic throwing techniques and katame-techniques. Unlike other martial arts, there are also sitting and standing techniques, as well as weapons such as the tachi (wooden sword), cane, and dagger.
