Stories Retold by The Lost Boys of Sudan, Volume One
Come gather ‘round—I am a Lost Boy, and I have a story to share!
Adventures Across Africa was created not only to entertain, but to spark meaningful conversations between children, parents, and educators about resilience, cultural understanding, and new beginnings. It is a bridge between continents and generations, reminding readers that stories have the power to open hearts and shape hopeful futures.
Blending unforgettable true experiences with timeless African fables, this children’s book series is retold through the eyes of James Manyok Ayuen, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan. In Volume One, young readers ages 5 to 14 and their families are invited into the heart of Africa, where courage, survival, and cultural wisdom meet.
James recounts his real-life journey as a young boy forced to flee civil war in South Sudan, separated from his family, and compelled to walk thousands of miles across forests and dangerous terrain in search of safety. Along the way, he and other displaced children found strength and unity by sharing the stories they remembered from home evening fires. These traditional tales of animals and ancestors, passed down through generations, became anchors of identity and hope during unimaginable hardship.
Each beautifully illustrated chapter features classic African fables such as The Tortoise and the Birds, The Elephant and the Sly Fox, and The Three Bulls and the Lion. Woven together with James’s lived experiences, these stories offer lessons in kindness, teamwork, honesty, self-awareness, and perseverance. Enriched with Monyjang (Dinka) vocabulary and student-drawn illustrations, the book serves as both cultural preservation and character education.
Perfect for classrooms, family reading time, and cultural learning, Adventures Across Africa also serves a greater purpose. All profits from the book series support African Independence Development (AID), a nonprofit dedicated to building schools and expanding educational opportunities across South Sudan and other underserved regions of Africa. Proceeds help support refugee children still living in camps in Kenya, Ethiopia, and beyond.
This book is more than a story. It is a mission. Through tales of resilience and unity, Adventures Across Africa inspires the next generation to dream boldly, act with compassion, and believe in the power of education to change lives.
James Manyok Ayuen
James Manyok Ayuen is the author of Adventures Across Africa: Stories Retold by the Lost Boys of Sudan, Volume One and Chairman of the Board of African Independence Development (AID). Born in the Bor region of what is now South Sudan, his early childhood was shaped by conflict, displacement, and survival.
As a young child, James was forced to flee his village during civil war, leaving his family behind. He became one of the thousands of children later known as the Lost Boys of Sudan, trekking more than 1,500 miles on foot in search of refuge. Along the journey, the children endured hunger, violence, and repeated displacement, yet found solace and connection through the retelling of the folktales of their homelands, stories once shared around family fires.
After immigrating to the United States, James rebuilt his life from the ground up. He learned English, pursued a college education and masters degree, and eventually spoke at the United Nations. His journey led him to found African Independence Development, a nonprofit committed to expanding education, STEM learning, youth empowerment, agricultural development, and community rebuilding across Africa.
James’s work is guided by a belief that education transforms lives, storytelling builds understanding, and kindness connects humanity. These values are woven throughout Adventures Across Africa, inviting young readers to explore new perspectives while discovering universal truths that bind us all.
African Independence Development (AID) is dedicated to creating lasting opportunity across Africa through education, innovation, and community empowerment.
AID works to build modern STEM-focused high schools, expand access to quality education, and prepare students with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
The organization also supports sustainable agriculture by training students and communities in efficient farming practices and providing modern tractors and farm implements that increase productivity while protecting the land.
For advanced students, AID opens pathways to higher education, including opportunities to pursue college studies in the United States.
At the heart of AID’s mission is a commitment to modernizing African communities while honoring and preserving their rich cultural heritage.
