The United Nations established the provision of AT as a human right. Yet, only ten percent of those in need of an AT device have access to one. According to the World Health Organization, currently more than one billion people need to use AT in the world. It is estimated that more than two billion people will need AT by 2050.
This section explores how advancement in AI offer the potential for development and enhancement of AT. When AI is combined with AT, it can empower people with disabilities to learn new abilities, master new skills, remove barriers, complete daily tasks, and improve access to the job market.
Learning Objectives:
Understand what constitutes an AT device and explore examples.
Learn the United Nations' position on supporting people with AT.
Identify the four main areas of combining AI with AT (communication, mobility, improving information, and cross-cutting themes).
Explore the opportunities and barriers for each of the four areas listed above.
Technological Trend:
The introduction of the computer in the late 1930’s has advanced and changed our society. Over time, the physical size of the computer has decreased from being the size of a room to becoming portable and even palm-sized. Computers are now more compact and affordable to purchase than before.
Assistive technology is any technology that enhances the performance or function of a specific skill, including physical abilities, cognitive processes, learning, and/or communication.
According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in the US, “any item, piece of equipment, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities is considered to be an assistive technology device.”
Here are some examples of assistive technologies:
Adaptive keyboards
Screen magnifiers and screen readers
Listening devices
Voice recognition software
Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices
In general, disabilities are categorized into four areas of impairment:
Hearing loss and deafness
Speech disorders
Vision impairment
Cognitive delay and learning impairment
